Trump ignores reality by pitting climate action against jobs.
Though Trump’s position on climate change is not ideal, let’s not give strength to his false narratives by feeling disheartened.
The fact is we are living a time of rapid, unprecedented transition in our energy infrastructure.
Already, renewables can be profitable without government subsidies. By 2025, solar prices are expected to fall by 84 percent, making solar cheaper than using coal on average around the globe.
Bloomberg reports: Italy Switches on Five New Subsidy-Free Solar Power Plants. The solar panels are supplied by Canadian Solar Inc., headquarters in Guelph, ON.
Let’s celebrate these stories loudly.
The TransformTO Report2, prepared by City of Toronto staff for consideration by Toronto Council in July, estimates that retrofitting buildings to increase energy efficiency could generate “80,000 person years of local employment between now and 2050.”
If Council passes this plan, Toronto will join a movement of cities across the world that are taking the lead on climate change action, regardless of the position of national governments.
Let us signal to our elected leaders that we will not be distracted by half-measures; our demands represent today’s floors, not tomorrow’s ceilings, and we know it.
